The seal inside a pump keeps the liquid being pumped from leaking out of the unit. The Johnson Pump Seals surrounds a shaft which is turned by a motor on one end and immersed in the liquid on the other. The seal maintains the integrity of the system by keeping the liquid inside the pumping chamber from leaking onto surrounding areas and also the motor powering the pump. 1 Empty the water from the system.
2 Remove any cover protecting the water pump. Unhook any wires or tubes and undo any brackets holding the pump in place.

4 Pry out the seals, taking care not to damage the walls of the compartment. Some water pumps have two or more seals stacked on top of each other. Remove all of them.
