Colombian president rewards Paralympic athletes

Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday rewarded the 39 Colombian athletes who took part in the London 2012 Paralympic Games with a variety of honors, recognitions and gifts.

The two athletes who came home with medals received the nation's highest honor, the Order of Boyaca, while the others received diplomas and scholarships to study at Bogota's Military University.

During a ceremony held at the presidential headquarters Palacio de Narino, in the Colombian capital Bogota, Santos thanked the athletes for their performance in London,Designer Handbags saying they were "proof that where there is a will, there is a way."

"Your results are a source of pride for Colombians, therefore these decorations are a sign of appreciation on behalf of the 46 million Colombians," said Santos.

Elkin Serna and Moises Fuentes, the two Colombian athletes who won silver medals at the Paralympic Games, were each decorated with the Order of Boyaca and presented with a car.

Serna told Xinhua he was grateful for the recognition and added that today disabled athletes enjoyed higher status in Colombia.

"I'm here today in Palacio de Narino receiving an award from the president. Here in Colombia, conditions have improved a lot for paralympic athletes. We are treated the same as the normal athletes," he said.

Colombian Paralympic Committee Chief Juan Pablo Salazar told Xinhua the paralympic athletes' success "ratified" the work done in the last four years.Designer Clothes Wholesale

Colombia finished in 61st place out of 164 countries and regions which attended the Games.
